A straight answer for shop owners, without the sales pitch. Industrial compressors have no WiFi radio and the good ones never will — so here is what actually goes online, the three routes shops take to get there, what you can genuinely see and control from a phone, and the eight questions that separate a system you check every morning from one you unplug after a month.

1. The Short Answer

Yes — but not by connecting the compressor itself. Industrial air compressors have no WiFi radio. What goes online is the compressor's controller, through a small gateway that reads it over the wired communication port it already has and forwards the data to an app. Most modern screw compressors can be retrofitted in under an hour.

In practice: a small box mounts on the wall near the compressor, two wires connect it to the controller, and from then on the machine appears on your phone — live pressure, temperature, run hours, notifications, and remote start and stop.

That one-sentence answer hides three decisions that determine whether you end up with something you check every morning, or something you stop looking at after a month. The rest of this guide is those decisions.

2. Why Compressors Ship Without WiFi (And Why That's Deliberate)

It looks like an oversight. It isn't.

A screw compressor is designed to run for fifteen to twenty-five years in a room full of dust, vibration, and electrical noise from motors starting all over the building. The controller on the front panel is built to that same standard: it does one job, indefinitely, without an update. Consumer wireless hardware is obsolete in three years and unhappy in that room.

There is a security reason too. A device capable of starting a 25-horsepower motor should not sit on the open internet waiting to be told what to do. Industrial controllers deliberately speak a short-range wired protocol instead, and anything that bridges them to the outside world is expected to be a separate, replaceable device.

So the real question isn't "can my compressor get WiFi." It is: what should I put next to my compressor to bring it online safely?

3. What Actually Connects: the Controller, Not the Compressor

Nearly every screw compressor built in the last decade has a small communication port on its controller — a pair of terminals it uses to talk to building systems, sequencers, or a service laptop.

A monitoring gateway is a small industrial computer that mounts on the wall, connects to those terminals with a two-wire cable, and reads what the controller already knows: discharge pressure, discharge temperature, motor load, speed, run hours, loaded hours, maintenance counters, and current machine state. It sends that to a server, and your phone talks to the server.

3.1 Why that distinction decides everything

A device wired to the controller reports what the machine is doing. A device clamped around the power cable only reports that the machine is drawing power.

Watch for this when comparing quotes. Power-clamp monitoring is genuinely useful for an energy audit, and it is much cheaper to install. But it cannot tell you your line pressure, your discharge temperature, whether the machine is loaded or idling, or why the pressure dropped at 10 a.m. If a quote does not list pressure and temperature among the reported values, you are looking at an energy meter with an app.

4. Three Ways to Get a Compressor Online

The third route is what most shops end up wanting, because it is the only one that answers the questions people actually ask: is it running, is it making air, is it too hot, when is it due for service, and what did it cost me last month.

5. What You See and Do Once It's Connected

  • Remote start and stop, including starting the whole shop in the correct order with the dryer leading
  • Automatic start and stop on your opening hours — for most shops this is the feature that pays for the system, because compressors left running through nights and weekends burn money quietly
  • Run-hour service tracking, counted from the machine's own hours rather than a calendar reminder nobody set
  • Energy and cost history, priced at your own electricity rate
Worth knowing: the value usually is not the monitoring itself. It is the compressor no longer running all night, and the morning you learn about a problem before it becomes a day without air.

6. 8 Questions to Ask Before You Buy

This is the part worth slowing down on. The differences between systems show up on the day something goes wrong, not on the day they are installed. Ask these of any vendor, including us.

6.1 Does it read the controller, or just the power?

Ask for the list of values it reports. If discharge pressure and temperature are not on it, it is a power meter.

6.2 What happens when the internet goes down?

The right answer: the compressor keeps running on its own settings, the gateway keeps recording, and everything syncs when the connection returns. Ask specifically whether your automatic start/stop schedule still runs offline. If the schedule lives in the cloud, a dead router on Sunday night means a shop with no air on Monday morning.

6.3 Does it need holes in your firewall?

It should not. A well-built gateway dials out to its server, the same way your phone does. If the installer starts talking about port forwarding or opening ports on your router, that is a device you will be explaining to your insurer later.

6.4 Does remote start actually work on your machine?

Remote monitoring is easy. Remote control depends on the controller model and how it is configured, and some setups will silently accept a start command and do nothing at all. Ask for it to be demonstrated on your compressor, with someone standing next to it.

6.5 Who owns the data, and where does it live?

You should be able to name the country it is stored in, and you should be able to export your own history.

6.6 iPhone, Android — and a browser?

Shops have both kinds of phone, and offices have computers. A system that works on only one platform will be used by only one person.

6.7 What does year two cost?

Hardware, subscription, and cellular data if the shop has no WiFi at the compressor. Also ask what happens if you stop paying: monitoring pausing is reasonable, a machine refusing to run is not.

6.8 Can it move to a different machine?

Compressors get replaced and shops get relocated. The gateway and the subscription should follow you rather than dying with the old unit.

If a vendor cannot answer these clearly, that is information about who you would be buying from — the same way it is with the compressor itself.

7. Will This Work on My Older Compressor?

Usually, yes. If the controller has a communication port — most units from roughly the last decade do — it can be read, regardless of who made the machine. Monitoring is not brand-locked.

Older machines with purely electromechanical controls are a different case. Run time and power can still be monitored, and pressure can be added with a sensor, but no gateway can report faults or service counters from a controller that does not keep any.

The fastest way to find out: take a photo of your control panel and of the model plate on the machine, and send both to whoever you are considering. Anyone who knows the equipment can tell you in a minute what your machine supports.

8. Is It Safe to Start a Compressor From a Phone?

It is, with the right guard rails — and you should insist on them rather than assume them.

  • A confirmation step before any remote start, not a single tap
  • A written log of who started or stopped what, and when
  • The ability to lock out a machine that is being serviced, so it cannot be started remotely at all
  • A system that refuses to start a machine reporting a fault, or on a day the shop is closed
  • Standard lockout/tagout procedures still apply. A remote system is an addition to them, never a replacement
The rule that matters most: the gateway must never become a single point of failure for your air supply. If it dies, is unplugged, or loses its connection, the compressor should carry on exactly as it did before it was fitted — on its own settings, under its own control. Any design that makes your shop's air depend on a small computer staying alive is the wrong design.

Can I connect my air compressor to WiFi directly?

No. Industrial compressors have no built-in WiFi radio, and adding one to the controller is neither supported nor advisable. Connectivity is added with a separate gateway that reads the controller over its wired communication port and connects to your network on the compressor's behalf.

Do I need WiFi at the compressor for this to work?

Not necessarily. WiFi is the simplest option if your signal reaches the compressor room. A wired Ethernet run works. Where neither is practical, a small cellular router beside the gateway is the usual answer, which adds a modest monthly data cost.

Will monitoring void my compressor warranty?

Reading data from the controller's communication port is a standard, supported use of that port and does not modify the machine. Ask your supplier to confirm in writing for your specific model, particularly if remote start/stop is part of the installation.

Can I monitor two or three compressors on one system?

Yes. A single gateway can typically read several machines on the same site, and the app shows each one separately. Multi-machine sites also open up scheduling and rotation options that a single machine does not have.

What happens to my data if I cancel?

Ask before you buy. A reasonable answer is that monitoring stops and your history remains exportable for a period. An unreasonable answer is that your machine stops running or your history disappears immediately.

How long does installation take?

For a modern screw compressor with an accessible controller, typically under an hour: mount the gateway, run the two-wire cable, enable the port on the panel, and set it up from a phone. Dryers and additional machines add a few minutes each.

10. The Bottom Line

You cannot put WiFi inside your compressor, and you should not want to. You put a gateway next to it, wire it to the controller in an afternoon, and the shop gets a machine that tells you what it is doing, starts and stops with your opening hours, and keeps its own service record.

When you compare options, judge them on the eight questions above rather than on the app screenshots. Every monitoring system looks the same in a screenshot. They stop looking the same the first time the internet drops, the first time someone needs to know who started the compressor at 9 p.m., and the first time you replace the machine underneath it.
